The heavier stuff sounds good to my ears, who cares if the lyrics aren't great? McCartney can pretty much turn his hand to most music styles. His versatility is his greatest asset in my opinion.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7621501513493185029.post-20721385033658824532009-03-02T08:48:00.000-05:002009-03-02T08:48:00.000-05:00Thanks for the note. But I didn't "slam" "Love Awake"; if it's not clear, it's the better part of that particular medley.wardohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07825405583474881509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7621501513493185029.post-10036605047858792232009-03-02T08:30:00.000-05:002009-03-02T08:30:00.000-05:00There is such widespread perverse joy in slamming ...There is such widespread perverse joy in slamming McCartney that reviewing becomes an indulgence for the reviewer rather than being anything informative. Ok, we get it: McCartney of Wings can't compare to Paul of The Beatles. Point #1: the area Paul is most lacking is his unwillingness to work on lyrics. This can be best displayed by the "Salamander" line in "Getting Closer". Ok, we get it: don't expect much from the lyrics. Point #2: Paul The Beatles was still a great creator of melody and great rock singer. And in these areas one can find many joys in "Back To The Egg". "Love Awake", for example - slammed above - has fine melodic lines if you kinda croon along and don't expect much from the words (i.e., learn Point #1). If you listen closely, Paul even sings with some of his old "Got To Get You Into My Life" gusto. And in "Getting Closer", "Arrow", "So Glad" McCartney lets loose with some vocals that, though perhaps 90% of Beatle Paul, shred the vocal talents of anyone singing in 79, or even today.

If you take what you can get, you'll often get a lot more. And there is a lot here to take, if you can just get it, and get over that McCartney is no longer a Beatle.

Robabard (3/9).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
